On right-handed models while playing a Sigma guitar the 'sideways M' becomes 'right side up' suggesting 'M' for Martin. The sigma symbol is often described as a 'sideways M.' While retaining the same early logo for several more years (c1975/76) the peghead itself began to take on a more tapered shape by 1972. The early 70s models (1970 -1975) can be distinguished by a more squared peghead, shaped similarly to that of a 'spatula.' The logo consisting of a gold decal with the single word in block lettering SIGMA surmounted with the Σ symbol (the Greek letter sigma), in mother of pearl. The 'First Generation' DM-5 and DR-7 (laminate wood bodies and tops,) as well as other early models (e.g., the GCS-7/CS-7) remained in production during this time as well. The first Sigmas were typically dreadnought acoustics, although Grand Concert Series (GCS) and classical models were also produced from the early 1970s (1971?) onward. Louis Music of Missouri, AMI is not allowed to use the brand name 'Sigma' in the U.S. prior to selling the brand to AMI, and had since been picked up by St. rights to the Sigma brand name and trademark had been allowed to lapse by C.F. In 2011 the German company 'AMI Musical Instruments GmbH' purchased the rights to the name and relaunched Sigma Guitars again, this time being produced in China.

The condition is very good for a guitar of that age. It is one of the later 1933 models with 14 frets, which makes it even more special! It is wonderfully balanced in sound and absolutely fun to play. It has a great quality sound and produces a fabulous mature vintage tone with sweet highs clear mids and a fine bass. This guitar sounds so wonderfully bluesy and would be a wonderful instrument for a Jazz/Blues guitarist. For each instrument selected high-quality materials were used and each instrument was tuned and optimized individually (this stopped in the 40’s and 50’s).
At that time Martin guitars were still built in limited numbers. The Martin Pre-War guitars are legendary among steel string guitars. What a great guitar … this is an original Martin from the “Pre-War” period – model 0-17.
